When latter-day saints talk about the Second Coming, I often hear them preach that not even the Savior knows when the Second Coming will be. To justify this, they may reference this scripture from the Bible:

I have no doubt that this scripture is true, in that it truly captures what the Savior said, and that the Savior was speaking truthfully. But that does not mean that the statement itself is still true.

A statement can be true at one time and cease to be true later. I might, for example, say “It hasn’t rained today” at 8am, but by 3pm it has rained, making my statement no longer true if it was interpreted in the later time frame.

What Jesus says at one time might not be true at another. Especially when he talks about things that can change over time. In fact, Jesus Himself changed over time. Consider Luke 2:52:

And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

If Jesus grew in wisdom, then what He didn’t know at one time, He may learn later. It is not a contradiction then nor a disbelief in the Bible, to allow for the possibility that when Jesus said He didn’t know when the Second Coming would be, it was true, but that later (say… now) He does know.

We should not preach that Jesus does not know when He will return. We can accurately preach that He did not know during his mortal life (or more precisely, at that time of His mortal life), but as to whether He knows now we cannot say.

And for my part, as the Savior has been resurrected having lived a perfect life, being brought back into the presence of the Father and receiving all that the Father hath, I personally believe that the Father isn’t holding out that particular date on His Son’s calendar. I believe the Savior at this point is very much aware of the most important upcoming date for which He must show up. I can’t imagine a purpose for the Father to be holding out that information from His Son at this point.
